at Brook Farm Veterinary Center
Brook Farm Veterinary Center is a Hudson Valley native, just like the milkweed growing in our garden or the black-capped chickadees at our bird feeders. We are lucky to be based in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, and we consider it our duty to help protect our environment both locally and globally.
We believe that being green is about values, attitude, choice and changing the way we think about our wastage. It requires developing an attitude toward sustainability and practices that can be incorporated into our everyday lives. We are a veterinary practice based on values that reflect an environmental ethic and social conscience. What we do directly affects the ecology of our local environment and the animals we take care of each day. We believe that businesses that are able to work with the environment rather than simply consume its resources, will not only rise to the top of their market, but will help secure their futures and the futures of succeeding generations.
Sustainability is a team effort. Our Client Advocates print conservatively and recycle liberally, our Animal Care Assistants stuff their cars to the gills for trips to the recycling center, and everyone turns off lights, computers, printers, and other appliances whenever possible. Many of our sustainability initiatives started with a suggestion from a team member; when an Animal Care Assistant suggested donating our own bottle deposits to the Farm Fund, it was the natural next step to start a Farm Fund recycling program for the rest of the community!
Some of our most recent initiatives include...
- Turning off computers and printers, and choosing energy-saving options when available
- Purchasing EnergyStar appliances whenever possible
- Establishing a community recycling program
- Starting an internal initiative to conserve and recycle cans, bottles, glass, paper, cardboard, and bulk plastic
- Monitoring our energy, water, and chemical use
- Establishing specific reduction targets for each department
Even a small business has the potential to produce a lot of waste; shipping in products and supplies carries a high cost in both energy and materials, and the path of least resistance is often the most wasteful. We are constantly looking for ways to trim down our environmental impact through energy audits, researching new technologies, and soliciting ideas from our staff.
